‘Tis the season to look for a new role!
Once the crazy year-end madness is behind us, many people start to look around to see what is going on in the market. Some people are just looking opportunistically, while others are ready to make a move ASAP.
One candidate I was working with was interviewing with 10 different companies. 10!!!
This just goes to show 1. There are a ton of new opportunities in the market right now, and 2. Interviewing for your next role is no easy feat. Imagine trying to keep track of 10 different opportunities that are running together simultaneously, but in all different directions? This is really tough stuff, to say the least.
If you are actively looking for a new role and are open to MANY of the opportunities coming your way, here are my suggestions on how to organize your search.
1.Start an excel spreadsheet with the different companies you are talking to.
It sounds like extra work but I promise you it’s worth it.
On the first tab list all the companies you are interviewing with, then have a separate tab for each company you are working with. Take notes on how many steps there are in the interviewing process, who you will be speaking to at each stage, and then your own personal notes on how you felt about the company. This will keep your mind and thoughts organized so you can go back to review and remind yourself what has happened so far.
2. Keep in close contact with your recruiter.
The recruiter you are working with should be helping you throughout the entire process, lean on them and their connection to the company. Put some of the responsibility back on them to keep you moving through the process quickly.
3. Rank your favorites.
I always ask my candidates to do this through the entire process. This forces you to take a hard look and evaluate the companies you are interviewing with. This will help determine if you are excited about an opportunity or not. The companies that are at the top of your list should be the ones you put the most effort and time into.
4. Narrow down your list.
My first comment to the candidate who had 10 opportunities was “narrow down your list”. More isn’t always better. Having an exclusive approach to your job search is going to be the most beneficial to YOU. You won’t waste your time on roles that don’t make sense and can put more of your time and attention into the ones that matter. This will lead to better end results.
Many people I have worked with say, “finding another job is like an entirely new job within itself!”, and they aren’t wrong. Taking a new opportunity should not be taken lightly and you want to make sure you organize that process so that you are putting your best foot forward and ideally land the job you want!!
I would love to talk through how you can organize your job search! Just send me a Linkedin Message and I would be more than happy to help!
Until then, happy hunting!
