Here I am referencing too many job offers, but clearly, this stands in many areas of our lives.
Too much candy (a delicious thing), can lead to cavities (a bad thing).
Too much screen time (a fun thing), can lead to feelings of lack and comparison, which we all know is the thief of joy (a bad thing).
Too many Netflix options (a great thing), can lead to an endless scroll and a night of just watching movie trailers without any real decisions made (a bad thing).
The job hunt is no different, ESPECIALLY in the market that we are in today.
We all know that this is one of the hottest job markets we have experienced in years. Recruiters have desks full of jobs, clients have hundreds of job openings, and candidates have millions of new opportunities waiting for them.
All good things, good until it’s not.
It’s a great hot market except it’s been harder than ever for recruiters to grab the attention and then land top talent into the amazing jobs they are working. Forget about the days of building out a robust pipeline…
It’s super exciting for hiring managers to be able to open up new jobs and expand their teams until they can’t actually find or land the talent they are looking for – which then leaves major gaps in their plan and leads to sleepless nights of how they are going to build out the team they need to hit growth targets.
Candidates are thrilled to have multiple companies to interview with and then multiple offers in hand until it starts to get confusing and overwhelming trying to decipher through the noise, and understand what do they truly want? What is sexy and exciting vs what their hearts really desire and need?
Too much of a good thing is very real, especially in this market we live in.
We all want options, but having too many choices is like a Friday night on Netflix. You see the thousands of movies you CAN watch, watch at least 30 trailers until you give up and just watch something you’ve already seen because you know you will like it in the end.
DON’T be a Friday Night Netflix scene.
Instead of going into your search or hiring efforts thinking I want to see it ALL! Narrow your focus. Before you begin, decide “what am I really looking for here? What do I really want to get out of this search/hunt?” Make a list of your top 3 priorities, then go from there. Don’t take on too much, but just enough where you don’t get lost in the noise and excitement of it all. Stay focused on the end result, and it will be so much easier to decide.
Are you looking for Drama, Comedy, or a Documentary? Start small and it will take you to where you ultimately WANT to go.
